Four East Lothian communities go head-to-head for community accolade
Four East Lothian communities have entered the prestigious Calor Scottish Community of the Year Awards 2005.
Entries have been submitted to all five categories of the awards, which include Environment, Business, Older People, Young People and Community Life.
Local communities represented in this year's awards are, Cockenzie and Port Seton Community Council, Wallyford Community Council, Musselburgh and Inveresk Community Council and Dunbar Community Development.
Commenting on the entries, Hamish Husband, Calor Scottish Community of the Year Manager, said,
"We have had a fantastic response to the awards this year. In total almost 100 communities have entered from across Scotland, with 78 percent of local authorities represented.
"As always we have received entries from a diverse range of communities the length and breadth of the country. The awards will be hotly contested and now the judges face the difficult challenge of short-listing the communities".
Last year East Lothian community, The Royal Burgh of North Berwick Community Council, won the Older People Award at a ceremony held in Edinburgh and presented by HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay.
Open to any properly constituted community group in Scotland, and carrying a total prize fund of over £5000, the Calor Scottish Community of the Year Awards aim to recognise and reward the efforts made by communities in improving their local area.
Each category winner receives £500 towards their community's activities with highly commended communities receiving £250. In addition, the overall Calor Scottish Community of the Year is awarded £1500.
The awards are supported by Calor Scotland in association with Communities Scotland and are backed by The Association of Scottish Community Councils (ASCC), The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Scottish Business in the Community (SBC) and The Robert Gordon University (RGU).
