England - North

Allendale, Northumberland - Regional Winner 2006/2007

The village of Allendale, Northumberland is an outstanding example of a community that has survived adversity, in the form of Foot and Mouth, to become stronger and more dynamic than ever.

A caring village, the community charity in Allendale, which is run as a Social Enterprise Company, has initiated and supported many projects within the village and major funding has been attracted through its work to get these projects off the ground. The Lions Club in Allendale also plays a major part in supporting village life.

Residents are kept busy with a rich and varied social calendar and the village hall is extremely well used with an array of organisations, interest groups and events on offer. The community buzzes with a welcoming, confident, forward-looking and positive outlook.

Villagers can keep track of the latest community news and events through the village websites, which are attractive, informative and easy to use. The independent judging team was impressed by the provision of ICT facilities which are available for the use of the whole community and help with using technology is willingly given when required.

Allendale is well-integrated and supportive where heritage and the traditional are embraced along with the modern, the natural and the caring.
