Sherfield on Loddon - Regional Winner 2004
The Hampshire village of Sherfield on Loddon, situated north of Basingstoke with a population of 1,600, is an inclusive community, offering activities and interests for all. The heart of the community is the village hall, which is in constant use by many local and outside groups. It is a registered charity and has a management committee constantly working to improve the facilities, including access and general modernisation.
Construction of new housing to the south of the parish will eventually add 800 to 1,000 homes within the parish boundary. Residents are happy to welcome newcomers and, with assistance from the Hampshire Paths Partnerships, a footpath map and guide is being produced, to include useful contacts and information, which will be circulated to welcome new residents. The parish council is also trying to source funding for a pathway/cycleway to allow a safe pedestrian connection between this new development and the village centre.
There is a strong business community in the village and local businesses are encouraged to advertise on the village website free of charge. In turn, local businesses support the village, assisting with fund raising activities and promoting local events. Whilst the village has good transport links to Reading and Basingstoke, residents need not venture far for day-to-day services such as a post office and a very well stocked village shop.
Young people in the village are encouraged to have their say and the village strives to provide for them accordingly. Leisure facilities for the young include a small BMX track and a consultation process has been started about the provision of a teen shelter. Activities for elderly members of the community are abundant, including a weekly lunch club, bingo and short mat bowls. Volunteers are also available to help with collection of medicine for example, or even for just a friendly visit.
Although already a successful and caring village, Sherfield on Loddons residents are determined to further improve life for all and are keen to work together to achieve this aim.
