A love of history, geography and British wildlife was very much the motivation and inspiration behind artist Leslie Rockey's work.
He was born in Devonport, Devon in 1920 and as a young man served in the RAF for 10 years. His artistic talents were spotted early on when he was in charge of designing the sets for stage shows for the forces, working with such legends as ex-Goon Michael Bentine.
It was Leslie's close association to the RAF which saw him later commissioned to design a stained glass window at St George's Church, RAF Halton, in memory of Lord Trenchard who founded the RAF.
Qualified as an art teacher, Leslie Rockey become Art Master at a secondary school in the Lake District and taught art at various clubs in the area. His artistic talents kept him busy with various commissions for book illustrations and portraits. Many of these works have been exported to places as far and wide as Spain, USA and Australia and his reputation as a versatile and talented artist spread.
A fascination with the architecture and history that could be found in many parts of the United Kingdom inspired Leslie to create the Heritage Collection. The collection is made up of individual tributes to particular locations that celebrate not only the famous features, but also the hidden treasures that give his work a uniquely accurate and personal texture.
To ensure each representation was accurate and fully encompassing, months of research were undertaken. Sifting through records, extensive exploration and liaison with local archivists, historians or tourist boards to create, in the words of Leslie Rockey, a "personal statement of being of a place". These wonderful testimonies provide the perfect tribute or gift for anyone who has ever been associated with these great locations.
Following the success of the Heritage Collection and Leslie's love of British wildlife, a "Countryside Collection" was launched - twelve designs featuring badgers, otters, owl, blue tit and dormouse.
Leslie passed away in May 2004.
