Ahoghill named ‘Environment’ Winner at Calor Village of the Year Awards
The County Antrim village of Ahoghill has been named ‘environment’ category winner at the Calor Village of the Year® 2008 awards ceremony at the Killyhevlin Hotel, hosted by TV personality John Craven.
Speaking about Ahoghill, who also won the ‘Older People’ category in the Calor Village of the Year® 2007 awards, Martin McDonald, Chief Executive, RDC said: “Ahogill over came serious flooding to welcome the judges into their community.
"What was clear from both the application and the judging was the passion the people in Ahogill have for their village and the strong community spirit they enjoy. This is a village that has transformed its environment.
“Environmental improvements have been placed at the heart of changes within Ahogill over the past year. Many hours of voluntary labour have been invested by the community to transform this village; a village which is now forward looking, welcoming and extremely vibrant.
“Local businesses kick-started the environmental initiatives which have now been embraced by others in the village and the voluntary input amazed the judges. Tree planting, flowerbeds and hanging baskets all add to the ambience of this village.
"Work has been invested to clean up old buildings and derelict sites. The local school has an eco flag and encourages environmental awareness amongst its pupils; and recycling facilities are scattering throughout the village."
