Benedy Named ‘Building Community Life’ Winner at Calor Village of the Year Awards
The County Londonderry village of Benedy has been named as ‘Building Community Life’ category winner at the Calor Village of the Year® 2008 awards ceremony at the Killyhevlin Hotel, hosted by TV personality John Craven.
The Calor Village of the Year® for Northern Ireland competition assessed communities on five aspects of rural life – building community life, business, young people, environment and older people and each category was awarded at the event.
Commenting on the competition, judging Martin McDonald, Chief Executive, RDC said: “As judges we were overwhelmed with the very warm and heartfelt welcome we received on our visits and I would like to offer my congratulations to the thriving rural community village of Benedy on this Award.
“We were impressed with the strong, caring approach villagers demonstrated to all the residents and the way the village benefits from an exceptional voluntary input which allows activities to take place almost every night, all year round. Good communications plays a key role in their community efforts.
"The support offered to young people, farmers, women, elderly, unemployed, indeed anyone that needs it, is impressive and the judges were amazed at the level of activities that such a small rural settlement can deliver.”
“I am delighted that this Award will help the Association to improve accessibility to the Community Centre for those with limited mobility, the elderly and young people,” added Martin.
