Donemana named ‘Older People’ Winner at Calor Village of the Year Awards
The County Tyrone village of Donemana has been named ‘Older People’ category winner at the Calor Village of the Year® 2008 awards ceremony at The Killyhevlin Hotel, hosted by TV personality John Craven.
Donemana was nominated by Dennet InterChange for the many initiatives undertaken to support and care for older people living in their community.
Speaking about Donemana, Martin McDonald, Chief Executive, RDC said: “As judges we were overwhelmed with the very warm and heartfelt welcome we received on our visits and I would like to offer my congratulations to Donemana on this Award.
“Donemana is a caring, considerate community that has provided an oasis for its older residents. The judges were inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the older people they met in the village, for their passion to their community and to all the stories of community life shared.
“A vibrant luncheon club offers great food to an average of 70 residents 3 times per week. Respite for carers provides a much needed break for those heroes in this community who do so much without recognition. Meals on wheels provides an essential service to those living in isolated locations outside the village, bringing, not only a warm meal, but company, chat and craic to its recipients.
“A foot clinic, transport services, regular trips, a savings club and cooking classes are other services on offer to the older residents of this village. Volunteering underpins all their activities and during our visit we met some real ambassadors for this village,” added Martin.
