Llandegla, Denbighshire

Llandegla, Denbighshire, has won the Business category for the 2008 Calor Village of the Year® award for Wales.

Situated to the south east of Ruthin in the county of Denbighshire, the village of Llandegla has approximately 400 residents.

A bi-lingual community that is made up of those born locally and those who have moved to the community from elsewhere in Great Britain, there is good community spirit in Llandegla.

A Sports and Social Group runs a youth club for the village’s young residents and this is supported by the whole community.

There are also fundraising events which are held on a regular basis to the benefit of all residents, raising money for projects such as the provision of a village playground.

The local school has faced an uncertain future in recent times; however, a hard-working PTA has succeeded in bringing the standard of education up to a satisfactory level, therefore securing its future for the time being.

A Gardening Club has been started on the school grounds and this has captured the imagination of many villagers, both young and old, and the whole community is enjoying the tasty output.

The business community in Llandegla is thriving with pubs, restaurants, hotels and B&B’s that serve both the villagers themselves and visitors.

Several leisure businesses encourage large numbers of visitors to the village on a regular basis and other businesses in the area include farmers and self employed entrepreneurs – one of whom is an IT specialist currently supporting the community in the construction of its new website.

The business community as a whole is very supportive of Llandegla, assisting with, helping to fund and advertising local events such as a mid-summer party competition – coined the Mad Summer games – which sees teams of residents competing in hilarious tasks in order to gain points and win the annual trophy!
