Village life and all that it means for communities may not be a tangible monument like an ancient building or great cathedral, but I believe that it is just as important and just as precious and it demands the best sort of protection that we can give. I was so pleased to hear of the launch of this competition in Wales it is a vitally important part of that protection and I cannot congratulate Calor warmly enough for their invaluable support of it
St Dogmaels
The award winning village of St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire welcomed TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall for a tour of the community in July 2006.
St Dogmaels won an impressive three category prizes for South Wales in the 2005 Calor Village of the Year® for Wales competition, coming out on top in the Business, Young People and Environment categories and the tour covered aspects of these areas of the community. Following a church service to celebrate the 80th birthday of The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall commenced on a walkabout of the village. This was followed by a discussion group attended by members of St Dogmaels’ business community and a representative of BITC (Business in the Community) – an independent business led charity supported by The Prince who is its President. The tour culminated in the presentation of a plaque to commemorate the visit as well as St Dogmaels’ past success in the Calor Village of the Year® for Wales competition.
Pendoylan
His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales announced the overall regional winners in the 2005 Welsh Calor Village of the Year® competition during a visit to the village of Pendoylan. The Prince spent time touring Pendoylan, the Environment category winner for Wales in the 2004 Calor Village of the Year® competition, with The Duchess of Cornwall before revealing Clawddnewydd in Denbighshire as the winner for North Wales, and the village of Ffarmers in Carmarthenshire the winner for the South.
The tour of Pendoylan included a visit to the local school and the village’s church, before culminating in the unveiling of a plaque on the village green to commemorate both the Royal visit and Pendoylan’s success in winning the Environment category for Wales in the 2004 Calor Village of the Year® competition.
